Happy new year folks! Wow to think it was last decade that I posted to you. Ok dead jokes aside, welcome back all, and I hope you’re ready for a whole new year of posts from Average Joe Reviews. I figured what better way to start the year than with a tag post, this one courtesy of Voyager. There doesn’t appear to be any real rules other than just answering the questions…so I guess let’s just dive into it.
Where did your geek come from? Parents? Siblings? Destiny?
It was self nurtured honestly. I think it stemmed from high school loneliness and self imposed seclusion. It wasn’t born out of a bad place or anything, just born from me feeling kinda alone and needing something to do. I think when I was exposed to anime it really took off and as time’s gone on I’ve grown into much more of a…sophisticated geek. My tastes are pretty much those of anything anime or anything retro and cult.
The First Geeky Thing You Got Into
Bionicle without a doubt. One of my earliest memories is buying my Toa Nuva era Lewa figure, and from then I basically kept collecting and collecting until I amassed a huge collection. Add to this that I had all the movies, read the comics religiously and can actually recall the movie scripts word for word and scene for scene, yeah you could say i was a tad obsessed with Bionicle. Even to this day I get my custom Bionicle figures out and pose them and shape them, Bionicle will always be a part of my life and I will always treasure the feeling of completing a set the first time.
Favorite TV Show as a Kid
This one cannot have a single answer. I’ll instead give you a little summary of my top 3.
- Bakugan New Vestroia: My favourite Bakugan series, this one had the perfect balance of tone and characters for me. I love the Bakugan designs, the story, the characters and especially the villains. Gundalian Invaders is alright and Mechtanium Surge…exists…but New Vestroia is the best for me.
- Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: The series that got me into Pokemon, the adventures of Ash through Sinnoh are my favourite. I like the characters of Dawn and Brock, the arcs are fulfilling and for me this show was very much approachable for a newbie like me. I owe my love for Pokemon to this series.
- Huntik: In hind-site this series isn’t very good, but I cannot help but adore it. One of the sickest opening themes of all time, coupled up with badass magical monsters and super cool magical powers. All while exploring the world and uncovering many amazing secrets? Sign me up!
Favorite Movie as a Kid
Bionicle Legends of Metru Nui. Once again back to Bionicle, this movie was my favourite of the original 3 movies. Unlike the other movies, which Ive grown to see in a more cynical light, Legends of Metru Nui has pretty much stayed the same for me in terms of its overall enjoyability and standard. I like the characters, the story is good and I love the design of the world, it really does look impressive. As a kid I was easy to please, so for this movie to still be my favourite Bionicle movie to this day really is a testament to it’s staying power for me.
Favorite Video Game as a Kid
Kirby Squeak Squad. Easily my favourite Kirby game, this one was my ‘backseat of the car gaming’ choice. I found the game so charming and fun to play albeit a little easy in hindsite but I still loved it. I remember me and my cousins staying up late while on holiday just to talk about the game and what we liked, and the satisfaction of beating the game 100%, actually making it the first game I ever fully ‘platinumed’.
Favorite Book as a Kid
Beast Quest for sure. A book written by the collective pen name of Adam Blade, Beast Quest spanned a multitude of books and series, and I collected…most of them. Eventually I did grow out of them but when I was younger I loved them. The story followed a hero named Tom and his journeys across the land battling deadly monsters and opposing the force of the evil wizard Malvel. I loved the monsters of each book, their creepy designs, the awesome action of the battles and especially the trading cards that came with them, those were a lot of fun. Beast quest is that one series that I would love to be turned into a TV show or movie, I feel it’s the perfect series for such an adaptation, if Witcher can do it so can Beast Quest.
Favorite Memory as a Kid
Honestly this is one I can’t really peg down. No major memories really stand out to me and honestly all memories I do…remember, aren’t ones I’d call favourites. I guess everything in this tag so far would be favourite memories, playing games, building Bionicles and LEGO, watching TV and movies, basically all things that I believe have helped mold me into the geek I am today.
A Character You Looked Up To as a Kid
This is a weird one but it’s gotta be James from Team Rocket. For some reason James always stood out to me as the kind of person I respected as a kid. I mainly respected him when he joined Team Rocket for freedom, something I greatly admired. I also loved how unlike other villains he was a loving trainer who cared for his Pokemon, and some episodes were written around this and were really emotional. I like James for his hopeless optimism, love for his friends and Pokemon and just being a fun loving guy, something I take to heart today.
A Character That Scared You as a Kid
I don’t have any. I’m going to assume that they were just so appalling and terrifying that I blocked them from my memory. But I don’t want to leave this question barren, so instead I’ll mention a character trait that scared me. Anything to do with body morphing or physical transformation in a menacing way. Example; In Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Drago undergoes an evil transformation, and you see his body pulsate and ripple while he screams…yeah, that scene alone made me a shivering wreck and I’m not kidding about that. This is why I try to put off watching Akira for as long as I have, the first time i saw a clip of the body horror I was a shuddering mess for a long (and I mean LONG) time. So yeah if you’re a shapeshifting painful blob of body horror…you’re young Average Joe’s bane.
Wrapping it up
That brings us to the end of the Childhood Tag. For nominations…I’m not gonna do them. I know I always nominate specific folks, but this time I want EVERYONE to do it. As a new years gift to you, if you wanna do this tag, you do it. This was a lot of fun, I liked recollecting on my interests of the past and looking at how I’ve grown. Thanks again to Voyager for the nominations, and a happy new year to you all.
