Let’s Make a Tag! Make it Anime Tag!

Happy New Year Everyone! To start off the new year, I’m trying something new. After months of responding to tags, it’s time for me to throw my own hat into the ring and make my own tag. I want to say that this idea comes courtesy of Irina and her suggestion to turn one of my posts into a tag. This idea came from one of her comments on my Books that Could be Anime post, she suggested that this premise be made into a tag. After hours of soul-searching, brainstorming and plenty of milk, I finally came up with a formula that works. I have named this tag *drumroll* Make it Anime Tag! The rules are simple.

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog post.
  • Choose 1 Book, Movie and TV show of your choice that you think could work as an anime. (A series of books or movies is allowed e.g. Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games)
    • If you want to pick more than 1 from each section that’s fine. Or if you can’t think of one for a specific category that’s fine also.
  • Explain why you think your choices could work as an anime. Maybe the advent of animation would enhance it, maybe the different anime genres could help expand and improve the story. Just go crazy with it.
  • Link back to the original post (this post) so I can read people’s suggestions, I’d love to read everyone’s ideas.
  • Include Make it Anime in your tags so everyone including myself can find them all easily.
  • Nominate around 5-10 bloggers.

These are pretty basic rules, nothing too special, but every tag needs rules. Also for a little bit of insight into my bizarre brain, this whole tag idea can bascially be described by the ‘Japonizing Beam’, example below.

Ok now that we’ve got the rules and the memes out of the way, let’s get this tag started!

Book: How to Train Your Dragon

Starting off this tag is the book series How to Train Your Dragon. Now many people know this series for its movies, but personally, I’m a lover of the book series. The differences between the books and movie are really quite astounding, some of the biggest differences being; Hiccup is even more of a loser, Toothless is a small and weedy dragon and dragons are already domesticated by the vikings. These books were brilliant, dripping with humor, great character interactions and were my bedtime story choice for years. I feel like this book could be turned into a really funny comedy fantasy anime, almost like a medieval version of Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. Toothless and Hiccup could have an amazing dynamic, Hiccup always having to put up with Toothless’s snarky attitude. The books also had a lot of heavy moments too that really did help balance some of the more light-hearted sections. Dragons, Vikings and a whole lot of humor, if these books were made into an anime, it’d be sure to be a high-flying show.

Movie: Silent Hill

I know this is a video game series first and a movie series second, but I feel like Silent Hill would be prime for an anime style show. Silent Hill has always been about surreal and bizarre creatures and disturbingly bizarre monsters of horror.  know the movies, especially the second one, don’t exactly hold the best track record, but nevertheless, the elements the show were wild, creepy and perfect for a horror anime. I can see it being some strange mix of Another, Blood C and Corpse Party, copious levels of gore, horrible monsters and some downright chilling tension. Also, who wouldn’t want to see Pyramid Head swinging his sword around like he’s guts from berserk in anime style? So while the Silent Hill movies aren’t necessarily adored by many, there’s no denying the creep factor they had, and I feel that all these elements along with a little bit of mystique and grim animation, could create one stellar, and scary, anime.

TV: The Sarah Jane Adventures

Anyone else remember this Dr. Who spinoff? The Sarah Jane Adventures was a show that is exactly what it says on the tin. It was a diet Dr. Who about old-time Dr Who companion Sarah Jane and her adventures as she protects earth from small alien invasions. The show was like Dr. Who but much smaller scale and with an approach geared more towards children which made sense considering it was broadcast on the kids channel CBBC. Sadly the show’s 5th season was cut short with the unfortunate passing of Sarah Jane’s actress Elizabeth Slayden but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have a great run. I think that this type of small, local story of alien threats would be a pretty fun show, with a villain of the week style to it like One Punch Man sort of. Maybe a bit of a Steins;Gate vibe could be had from a Sarah jane anime too. The animation could really lend itself to the wild and inventive designs that the show had like the Grask, Trickster and Slitheen (see picture below). The more grounded setting could also make it more of a slice of life type show, with the aliens serving as catalysts for development and character growth. I went with this over Dr. Who because i think that an anime version would benefit more from a smaller setting, and as an anime i think could really work as a sci-fi slice of life show.

  1. A creative one! Thanks for tagging, but I don’t think I’ll be able to get to it soon if I do. This year’s gonna be hella hectic for me! But I do love your adaptation ideas and look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with!

  2. A Silent Hill anime sounds pretty cool to me. There’s not enough horror anime so that would be a welcome change. Plus the added benefit of animation would help the animators come up with some seriously messed monsters. I would also like a How To Train Your Dragon anime. Love me seeing some dragons.
