Synopsis

As the Youma pour into the world, the shinobi teams all band together to combat the monsters. Yumi and Fubuki engage in a final decisive battle that shakes the earth around them and brings them both to the brink, both physically and mentally. While that occurs, the other girls fight the Youma threat while Asuka attempts to seal the monsters, but her condition continues to get worse. Katsuragi engages in a plan to lure the Youma to her using the other girls as sexy bait. Yumi and Fubuki flash back to their time as children, and Fubuki’s past is slowly revealed to us. The root of her hatred is revealed and her conflicting ideals are exposed. Her calm demeanor slowly shatters as Yumi attempts to reach out to her, but Fubuki refuses her and the two power up to their ultimate forms, the final strike is cast, and only one shall leave undefeated.

So this is where new Ghost type pokemon come from?

What I Liked

The flashbacks of Fubuki’s history was a great addition to this episode. Seeing her turmoil was really something that you feel and actually witnessing the seed of her villainy appear was both tragic and interesting. The Youma designs were also very creative and allowed for some really unique looks and funky styles, I’m so glad the Youma were brought back for this series. The scene with Katsuragi and her ‘live bait’ was hilarious and wonderfully showcased all the different girls personalities. The reveal of Asuka’s injuries was a tense scene where you really were wondering how the girls will take it. The flashbacks to Yumi and Fubuki growing up together were also really sweet since they helped showcase how the two of them grew to love each other and offered a more unique spin on their relationship now that it is more known to us. Seeing Fubuki slowly break from the calm and condescending girl from before into an angry, uncontrolled beast like state was also pretty good to watch since it proves her emotional battle is beginning to escalate. So overall this episode had some decent character moments and that was where it truly shined, however the rest of the episode was somewhat lacking…

Oh Ryouna, you really are a marvelous masochist.

What I Didn’t Like

The animation was consistently ‘middle of the road’ so there’s no reason to bring it up since it would be basically criticizing the whole episode and I don’t want to do that. I do with the fight choreography was a little both better since it suffered from both pacing problems, being pretty short and not offering much uniqueness since it mainly consisted of either dodging or boring blade slashes. In fact the whole episode was paced somewhat poorly, it wavered between comedic and light-hearted to dark and sinister and sometimes it was too jarring. I did enjoy the character interactions, but I feel they focused on some more than others and it did create an overall messy tone. This episode was probably the worst in terms of its pacing, but other than that this episode isn’t awful, it just has some of the more noticeable flaws in my opinion.

Erm…I assume she’ll take up farming… Thanos did it.

Final Thoughts

I can’t really think of much else to say about this episode. I did enjoy it, but in hindsight it was the one that I felt had the most on-screen problems. The animation was very average, the pacing was somewhat lackluster and the overall tone was pretty inconsistent. But the episode did offer some much-needed exposition and has ushered us into what i think may be the final episode. So i don’t hate this episode, I just found it underwhelming.
